My poem: Deqa Mahammed

The Caged Bird Writes

Maya Angelou…

Stunningly beautiful,

Her words exquisite

A visionary, yet simplistic

A victim of pain and molestation

She overcame the devastation.

She fought for freedom alongside the greats

Martin Luther King and Malcolm X

A product of the system, to bring change was her fate

Like a bird in the sky, her words soar high

So free, so expressive.

People around her are no longer oppressive.

Like the caged bird signs, she writes…

Writes for change, for love, and for a new day

Writes to pave the “I have a dream” way

She’s as strong as steel

And knows how to feel.

She goes through life

As an undeniable legend

A god send,

She speaks her words

Like the rays of the sun, they reach the world.

  3. Deqa, you captured much of what is the essence of Angelou. I like the way that you mix her words ("Caged bird") and her imagery into your poem. It helps me to picture her.
