"Melodious Thunk"

The Legend “Melodious Thunk”,
So as his lady called him.
He changed the sound that we all know,
To be new jazz to normal folks.
He was an American jazz pianist and composer,
Who introduced his unique improvisational style.
He even made the cover of TIME Magazine,
Only one of five jazz greats can make that claim.

He was the founder of Bebop,
And had an unorthodox approach to the piano.
He gave a highly percussive attack,
With abrupt use of silences and hesitations.

He started playing at the age of six,
In New York City essentially self-taught.
He began to play on the church organs,
Soon to Manhattan for Milton’s Playhouse.

He came from Rocky Mount, Carolina,
In the autumn of 1917.
Thelonious Sphere Monk,
Will always be Bird to me.
