The video about James Stewart was truly amazing. We discussed the themes of his dad's influence during childhood, racism, his way of riding and consequences, and his influence on the culture of the sport. I thought it was funny that his dad took him out on a motorcycle ride when James was only three years old. I could not believe it, but it shows that it was his destiny from day one (day three to be exact). My favorite part of the video was relating to the theme of confronting racism when he and his dad go to a race and a man confronts James' father by saying, "We don't race niggers here." And his father replies with, "Good, because we want to race motorcycles." I think this is a very powerful statement and I could not think of a better come back to such a rude comment. I bet that man regrets saying that after seeing James Stewart now. I love that he was never torn down by the racism, when people would flip him off and call him names, he would simply give them "thumbs-up" and would never let their comments affect him.
The video on DJ Gregory was incredibly touching. I love stories of people who never let something hold them back, and that is exactly what this story was about. I think the key themes in this are obviously determination, support, and love of the game. DJ loves to gold and he himself even said he is not very good, but he just loves it so much he keeps going. The fact that he chose to walk every hole, every round of every tournament was absolutely amazing, because as they said, no one does that, so a person with a disability doing that is just incredible. I loved when he said he fell more than 24 times, but he just got back up, brushed himself off and kept going. I think this kind of determination is stunning. Tears were brought to my eyes when DJ said he gets embarrassed watching himself walk. That broke my heart that he felt that way about himself. I learned from this video to do exactly what you want, and if people doubt you, that is more of a reason to be even more determined to prove yourself.
