Poem from Sameya

Color of Truth

Naïve and wondrous as a young lady

She dreamed of flowers and fist full of candy

English men bought her along with a herd

Taking rein of her life to foster the creed

Little Miss Isabella spoke only Dutch

Her master would whip her for not understanding much

Quickly and affectively, she learned to cater for their demands

Yet, they continued with their harsh commands

Growing Isabella began to pray out-loud

These kept her going and strengthen her sole

Targeting her forbearance and unfailing obedience

Incentive of freedom was promised for consistency

Cruel master pulled her rein, violating her trust again

That is when she broke-down and shed tears in pain

She prayed for mercy and for direction

This enabled her to make the correction

No strength could get in her way

When Lord gave her the courage to walk away

Along her journey, she met natives who believed in humanity

Through them, she discovered scrolls of Christianity

Old Testaments became her passion

Readily she adhered to the truth with compassion

In Lord’s way, she preached along as Sojourner Truth

Anti-slavery, women’s right and religious tolerance was her pursuit

Up to this day, her words hold courage, strengthen and aspiration

Masses are captivated by her unfathomable fashion

If she can salvage her purpose in life

Then, what dissuade us in our strife
